CHAPTER TWELVE
It was dark by the time they reached Ponceâs place. He lived in a nice little brownstone in Bethesda.
And, of course, he wasn't there.
âI can put an APB out for him,â Alex offered.
Jessie shook her head. âI donât want to spook him and send him underground.â
âWe might not want to wait on that APB,â Matt said. âHe could be hunting as we speak.â
âIâm aware of the urgency, Matt, thank you,â Jessie snapped.
She felt the othersâ eyes on her and reddened with guilt. It wasnât Mattâs fault that Caesar had upset her.
âSorry,â she said. âWe canât snap at each other because of the urgency this guyâs created for us. That includes me. Look, letâs go check out the house and see if we can find anything. If he doesnât show up, and we donât find a reason to clear him, weâll put out that notice.â
âHold on,â Jerry said. âI think thatâs him.â
Sure enough, a late-model sports sedan pulled in front of the brownstone, and Lorenzo Ponce exited the vehicle.
The officers got out and approached him, fanning out so they could more easily stop him if he tried to run.
Lorenzo clearly wasnât expecting anyone to be looking for him. He didnât even notice the officers until they were climbing the steps to his porch. He hummed a tune to himself as he opened the door.
âLorenzo Ponce?â Jessie asked.
He whirled around, eyes wide as dinner plates. His eyes flitted between the five agents. âWhat the hell is this?â he asked.
âWe need to ask you a few questions,â Jessie replied.
âNo, you donât,â Lorenzo said. âYou need to get off of my porch.â
He punctuated that statement with a swift right hand. Jessie ducked it only to narrowly avoid a left knee launched at her jaw.
Are you serious?
Apparently, he was, because he threw another punch. Jessie parried this one, and before Lorenzo could throw another, Frank rushed him and pushed him against the house. Lorenzo lifted his arm to elbow Frank, but Jerry grabbed it and pinned it against the wall.
âLet me go!â he shouted. âIâll call the police!â
âWe are the police!â Matt said.
Lorenzo stopped, seeming to notice their uniforms for the first time. âOh,â he said, âwell, what are you doing here? I havenât done anything wrong. You have no right to arrest me!â
âWe do now,â Jessie said, âfor assaulting a federal agent and attempting to assault another.â
âNot to mention being phenomenally stupid in the process,â Matt added.
Lorenzo glared at them as he struggled, but behind his glare, Jessie could see fear. She stood in front of him and said calmly, âAt the moment, Iâm all right with having this conversation in your house. Keep acting like an idiot, and weâll be having it at a police station, and youâll be chained to the floor.â
Lorenzo glared a moment longer, but then sighed and slumped in defeat. âAll right. Will you tell your boys to let me go?â
âNo,â she said, âWeâre going to walk you into the house and sit you down exactly where we want you to stay for the entire conversation.
