CHAPTER TWELVE

It was dark by the time they reached Ponce’s place. He lived in a nice little brownstone in Bethesda.

And, of course, he wasn't there.

“I can put an APB out for him,” Alex offered.

Jessie shook her head. “I don’t want to spook him and send him underground.”

“We might not want to wait on that APB,” Matt said. “He could be hunting as we speak.”

“I’m aware of the urgency, Matt, thank you,” Jessie snapped.

She felt the others’ eyes on her and reddened with guilt. It wasn’t Matt’s fault that Caesar had upset her.

“Sorry,” she said. “We can’t snap at each other because of the urgency this guy’s created for us. That includes me. Look, let’s go check out the house and see if we can find anything. If he doesn’t show up, and we don’t find a reason to clear him, we’ll put out that notice.”

“Hold on,” Jerry said. “I think that’s him.”

Sure enough, a late-model sports sedan pulled in front of the brownstone, and Lorenzo Ponce exited the vehicle.

The officers got out and approached him, fanning out so they could more easily stop him if he tried to run.

Lorenzo clearly wasn’t expecting anyone to be looking for him. He didn’t even notice the officers until they were climbing the steps to his porch. He hummed a tune to himself as he opened the door.

“Lorenzo Ponce?” Jessie asked.

He whirled around, eyes wide as dinner plates. His eyes flitted between the five agents. “What the hell is this?” he asked.

“We need to ask you a few questions,” Jessie replied.

“No, you don’t,” Lorenzo said. “You need to get off of my porch.”

He punctuated that statement with a swift right hand. Jessie ducked it only to narrowly avoid a left knee launched at her jaw.

Are you serious?

Apparently, he was, because he threw another punch. Jessie parried this one, and before Lorenzo could throw another, Frank rushed him and pushed him against the house. Lorenzo lifted his arm to elbow Frank, but Jerry grabbed it and pinned it against the wall.

“Let me go!” he shouted. “I’ll call the police!”

“We are the police!” Matt said.

Lorenzo stopped, seeming to notice their uniforms for the first time. “Oh,” he said, “well, what are you doing here? I haven’t done anything wrong. You have no right to arrest me!”

“We do now,” Jessie said, “for assaulting a federal agent and attempting to assault another.”

“Not to mention being phenomenally stupid in the process,” Matt added.

Lorenzo glared at them as he struggled, but behind his glare, Jessie could see fear. She stood in front of him and said calmly, “At the moment, I’m all right with having this conversation in your house. Keep acting like an idiot, and we’ll be having it at a police station, and you’ll be chained to the floor.”

Lorenzo glared a moment longer, but then sighed and slumped in defeat. “All right. Will you tell your boys to let me go?”

“No,” she said, “We’re going to walk you into the house and sit you down exactly where we want you to stay for the entire conversation.
